- Used to determine the bearing capacity of soil layers in road constructions, foundations, highways, airport and subgrades and sub-layers of soil in place by means of field loading tests.
- The bearing capacity of a soil is not simply a soil strength parameter, but it also depends on the magnitude and distribution of the load, dimension, and geometry of the loading plate and depth of embedment. This bearing capacity can be used in soil investigations and for the design of foundations.
- The method gives information of the vertical deformation and strength characteristics of soil in situ by assessing the force and amount of penetration with time when the plate is to penetrate the soil.
